Backcountry skiing and ski tours in the ski circus Saalbach Hinterglemm in the Salzburger Land – between “off pist” and powder snow.
The alarm rings early in the morning – it is way to early in the day to get up when you are on holidays. You check the look out of the window and see the Glemmtal valley lying in fresh snow. The peaks in the valley are already orange from the morning sun. Not time to loose – get up – it is time for a backcountry skiing day in Saalbach Hinterglemm.
While you prepare yourself and get your gear together you can smell the breakfast coffee and fresh pastry from the kitchen of the hotel Unterellmau. An extensive breakfast is crucial if you want to spend a long day of skiing in the Saalbach Hinterglemm backcountry. Saalbach Hinterglemm is more like an “underdog” for ski touring – the real powder jewellery are hidden in the backcountry and it takes a bit of an effort to reach them.
Go and ask around in the valley and you will find out that the best ski tours of the region are in the area of the Hinterglemmer Talschluss. Tours to the Staffkogel or the Schusterkogel are intense but rewarding. For those who want to have it a bit easier there are plenty of freeride runs around the ski resort. Most of them you can reach by cable car – or you have to hike just a little bit. Check out the Stemmerkogel or the Spieleckkogel or just ski down the “Marxen” from the Schattberg.
Please make sure that you only start well informed about safety and the weather forecast and that you double check the avalanche reports for the region.
